Title: Side trip to Roseau MN/ Polaris Factory tour & Experience Center
Post by: Autolube on May 18, 2009, 09:40:06 PM
This past Friday, Bear and I took a side trip 60 miles north from Thief River Falls to Roseau to hopefully catch a tour of the Polaris plant. We got our tour and also got to take in the Polaris Experince Center next door to the plant. This was a really nice museum full of excellent Polaris sleds earmarking some very significant company history. I will post pictures of some of these sleds in future threads.

We were very fortunate, our tour guide for the day was the daughter-in-law to the late Allen Hetteen (co-founder and past president of Polaris Industries)  She was super nice and had lots of interesting insights. She gave Bear some extra special attention being that he was wearing his Arctic Cat shirt.  :cheer:

This is one of the Sno-Travelers that was used by Edgar Hetteen and crew in the famous 1960 Alaskan Expedition. Edgar made this trip as a marketing strategy to prove the reliability and general usefulness of these machines.

The Thrill Team was another marketing idea that paid off for the winters 69 and 70.
However had to be discontinued due to the sport becoming significant enough that there was a need to promote safety.

Our tour guide told us remains of these destroyed Star Cars were buried in a hole in the ground here in Roseau where part of the plant now stands.  :'(

Nice pics!

I guess by the looks of it, they didn't allow any picture taking while in the factory.  Too bad.

Back in the summer of '89, we went up to Roseau (on bikes) for Polaris' 35th anniversary party.  I had my big honkin' Magnavox VHS video camera going through the whole tour, both Arctic and Polaris.  Cat didn't care, Polaris said no, but I shot from the hip anyway.

The experience center looks very interesting.

Nothing better than taking a bike ride to look at sleds.

You are  coorect Fur Coat Guy, they asked us not to take pictures in the plant.  :baseballbat:

They have four assembly lines, 2 for ATV's, one for sleds and one for side x sides. Only two lines running at the time. Economy is affecting them as well :-[

Safety is for chumps.
